Fotocollage of Rice Estate project in Tidal Lowlands concentrating on Post Harvest Management.

The Rice Estate area hopes to cover 10,000 ha in Telang and Saleh Schemes at the end of 2003. Inputs will be also required on water management infra-structure. The Tidal Lowland Guidelines project hopes to contribute in advise on inputs required. There is a request that inputs will concentrate on farmers inputs as much as possible.

President Megawati is landing by helicopter for the opening the Rice Mill on 24 March 2003

She has just arrived with her husband

The president cuts the rice for the Panenraya

Dr.Robiyanto gives some explanation about the Rice Mill and the Rice estate project

Farmers are very enthousiastic about the development.

Rice Mill

The capacity of storage is 1000 ton rice with a production of 40 tons/day for drying and de-husking

Threshing

The harvested rice is threshed here.

Threshing

Mostly young people (including girls) work here. A very good salary is possible (about 5 Euro/day)

Mechanization attracts young people

Here the young people prefer to stay on the farm and have no interest to go to the big town.

The Workshop, Tractor wheel repair

Young people everywhere.

Mechanic

Another job for the young, including the land preparation by tractor.

The remaining straw after threshing

At the moment there are questions what to do with the straw?

Most of it is burned at the moment.

The ash is used to fertilize horticultural crops like red peppers

Other people think to use the straw as burning material for drying the wet husked rice in box-driers. (no practice yet as for fuel now kerosine is used)

The Combiner

When farmers become more rich and the soil will, become more ripe than the combiner will solve the problem of the remaining straw after threshing forever.

The box-drier

The Government has given on a loan-bases some box-driers for drying the field-dry husked rice

Local entrepeneurs make box-driers themselves.

This brick-box-drier has a capacity of 3.5 ton/day

The burner and blower of the box-drier

The box-drier uses now kerosine for the burner and will blow the hot air into the box-drier

Further it gives the yields of the first crop in March 2003 expressed in tons field-dry husked rice/hectare The lower yields between TC 2 and TC 3 are related to wet fields with high contents of organic matter. Each field is about 1 Ha in size.
